Yesterday I wrote about the message the movie Hancock gave about the importance of following your calling. Today I'm going to reveal the second message I received from watching it. It's about creating a symbol or uniform that stands for your calling.
In the movie, Hancock didn't wear a superhero costume at first. His PR friend stressed the importance of having a uniform that represented who he was similar to a police officer, a minister, or a nurse. It was a light bulb moment for me. I realized many careers don't have symbols or uniforms. At least not formally.
People respond to symbols and uniforms. It's the fastest way to convey the message to yourself and others what you do and what you are about. The most important part is cementing the message to yourself or no one else will believe it. So, if you know your calling or when you do, think about creating a uniform or symbol (similar to a badge) that says hey! I'm a professional, dang it and I'm proud.
How about wearing certain jewelery like a necklace or brooch that symbolizes your your work? Or, you could choose certain colors that symbolize your career and create your own “uniform” with clothes. Esther Hicks is a prime example by wearing black pantsuits with a white shirt to her workshops.
If you work at home create a visual atmosphere that represents your career. Display your certifications prominently on the wall in your office. Create a photo gallery of yourself at events, workshops and/or your graduation ceremony.
So get going. Take a little time this week and create a visual, earthbound presence for your career.
Here's a brief video of Esther Hicks and her signature "uniform".
